History of Devon Thatching
Devon Thatching was started by Rob Wilmott in 2001 and is dedicated to providing the very finest quality work.
A Thatched Roof
A thatched roof can be expected to last for a long time, with some lasting around 25 years or more. However, it is imperative that the roof is well maintained during this time, to prevent any unnecessary damage.
Thatching is one of the more durable roofing materials available, but it can eventually succumb to decay. The damage will not only detract from the character and appearance of your property, but will also leave it exposed to the elements.
OUR SERVICES
It is advised that, if you spot signs of wear and tear on your thatched roof, to seek advice from professionals. Devon Thatching Ltd are happy to offer our expert and honest opinion and, if necessary, we can arrange a no-obligation site visit.
Re-Thatch
Depending on the type of material and location of the property, thatched roofing needs replacing approximately every 25 years.
In Devon, wheat reed and water reed roofing is traditionally ‘re-coated’. This involves stripping off the top layer of thatch and adding a fresh, new layer on top. Thereby preserving the original timbers.
Re-Ridge
The ridge is a sacrificial component and will usually need to be replaced every 8 to 10 years.
An array of ridge styles are available, ranging from a traditional ‘flush’ ridge or block cut ridge to a lavish block patterned ridge.
Devon Thatching Ltd can also provide straw finials from, small birds to large foxes, to add a unique final touch.
New Build
Devon Thatching Ltd have an abundance of experience working alongside architects and construction contractors when constructing new thatch to new timbers, with appropriate fire board being installed.
Devon Thatching Ltd are happy to work on any size project.
Repairs
Inevitably, over time a thatched roof may begin to show signs of wear and tear. It is sometimes possible to carry out repairs, rather than re-thatch.
Devon Thatching Ltd offer a no obligation inspection of properties to determine the best solution to prolong the life of the thatched roof.
Maintenance- ‘Re-dressing’
Periodic maintenance can extend the lifespan of a thatched roof, whilst also improving the aesthetic appeal of a property. Usually, all that is required is brushing down any loose debris, overgrowths of moss and ‘dressing’ the roof.
This is also an ideal opportunity to assess the condition of the thatch, identifying any potential deterioration or issues.
Insurance Surveys
Devon Thatching Ltd are able to carry out surveys and inspections to your thatched roof and provide a detailed report. These cover all the information that an insurance company needs, although conditions and questions may vary from company to company. The survey will give the owner an indication of whether any immediate repair work is needed, in addition to the likely remaining lifespan of the thatch. A specialist thatch survey is also recommended when buying or selling a thatched property.
